make-mistakeYou’ve heard it, I know you have. You’ve been told to innovate or die. And, in some businesses that’s the truth.

The real truth is that for most of us innovation is a big concept that we don’t understand very well. We think we need to re-invent what we’re doing. We think we have to make changes that are too big and scary for us to even think about.

Here’s a way for you to think about innovation and take some first steps that you might works for you. Read on to find out more.

Start with being honest with yourself.

The first step is to be honest with yourself. No, not about the need for being innovative.

Start with something easy. Start with just admitting that you make mistakes. You don’t just make a mistake every once in a while. I bet you make mistakes every day.

Here’s what I want you to do. Start keeping track of the mistakes you make. Look at what you do to fix them and think about those fixes as the innovations they are.

Is that something you’ll be willing to do?

You already innovate every day.

I’ve heard it too many times to count. People I speak with tell me Josh, I’m just not very innovative.

Too that I say balderdash. I know you’re innovative. I know you have things happen every day that force you to either make a small change in what you’re doing or look at something differently. That’s innovation.

Are you starting to see how easy it is to be innovative?

It’s small steps that you take.

I know that you don’t have a lot of free time. How do I know this? It’s easy. No one has lots of free time.

Because you’re time starved you probably don’t think you have time for innovation. I can promise you that innovation doesn’t take a lot of time. That is unless you decide you want to do great big projects that take lots and lots of planning.

The truth is big projects almost never work out well. Instead I want you to think small. I want you to take small steps and I want you to write down what you’ve done. Then I want you to look at the changes you’ve made once a month.

You’re going to be very surprised how much you change and how innovative you really are.

Mistakes are where you start.

I’m a huge fan of mistakes. One of my favorite quotes is from Buckminster Fuller. He would say, “You don’t learn less.” and he would refer to mistakes as learning opportunities.

Now that you know that mistakes are learning opportunities, doesn’t it make sense that you want to make more of them. Just think about all the learning you can now do.

At first it might feel strange that you are celebrating mistakes. After a while you’ll get to love it. How does that sound?

Remember, it’s small and fast.

I know what you’re thinking. You think I’m out of my mind. You’re thinking that you don’t want to make mistakes and you can’t admit it when you do.

I have two words for you……stop it. You’re going to make mistakes and as long as they’re small you can fix them quickly, be innovative about your thought process and move on.

Great innovation is done in small steps. No one who’s really good at this game makes giant steps. All of the innovative people in the world know that this is a sure way to fail.

I don’t want you to fail, I want you to learn how innovation can make your life better.
