blog-stopI’m hoping the answer is yes and I’ll bet the answer is no. Too often I see entrepreneurs hang out on their own wondering if they’re doing it right. The best way for you to figure this out is to either form or join a mastermind group. Here’s why:

No one in your business tells you the truth.

I think having a blog gives you a great opportunity to let the world know what makes you different. It gives you the opportunity to let us know what your passion is. It’s a really good way to build your reputation with all of the stakeholders your company serves.

It’s an easy way to let the world know how special you are. It’s a way for you to have a little fun and show everyone just how smart you really are. Here are some ideas for you to think about:

You do have a blog don’t you?

This is the first thing. If you don’t have a blog you’re missing a huge opportunity to let the world know who you are and what you stand for. You could have a chance to show the world what you believe and why you think it’s important.

The reason I like a blog is that it’s the place I get to let my hair down. It’s the place where I can be playful and no one takes offense. After all a blog is not a formal quarterly letter, it’s just a place where I spend a little time writing about a topic I have a passion about.

What about you? Do this sound like something you’d be interested in?

Let your personality come through

I think this should be the first rule of blogging. I tend to be a little irreverent. I bet it even comes through in the writing I do. I just don’t take the world and hopefully myself very seriously. I like to have fun with things and my blog posts are a great place for me to exhibit this trait.

Too often I read blogs that look like they’re an academic paper. When I run across something like that it only takes me two sentences before I leave.

Have your blog show what your real personality is. It’s the easiest way to pick up raving fans who will tell the world about how cool you are.

Be interesting

There are thousands of blog posts published a day. If you can’t manage to be interesting and find interesting things to write about you can be sure that no one is going to read your blog.

On the other hand if you decide to put yourself out there and write something a little controversial and interesting you’ll find that you quickly start to gather a tribe who reads your posts on a regular basis. I can tell you that my most read blog posts are the ones where I’m the most controversial.

Write like you’re a human being

Make sure you use plain language when you write your blog posts. Write as if you’re having a conversation with someone. Here’s a nice little hint – after you write your blog read it out loud to yourself. If you find your writing doesn’t sound like the way you talk, change your post.

Really, you do want to make your blog posts conversational. It’s what makes writing interesting and fun to read. Remember, most people read blogs for fun. If you don’t make yours fun, no one is going to read it.

Write to your target audience

There are two things you need to do here. First, you need to write blog posts about things your target audience is interested in.

I’m a huge Grateful Dead fan. I don’t write about them very often for one very simple reason……not many of the people who read my blog posts are also interested in the Dead. In fact, I bet if I wrote about them a lot I would be getting a reading audience I’m not really interested in talking with, at least from a business point of view.

Instead, I write about what makes a private business really pop. It’s a topic I love to talk about. It’s something I have expertise in and one I’m more than willing to share my knowledge about.

The second thing you need to think about is to make sure you write about something you have real passion around. If you don’t have passion, you’re going to get bored writing your blog very quickly. When that happens writing becomes a chore. The best bloggers I know are those who love to write because it’s a way for them to talk about a topic they just love.

Do you have a topic that you love? Do you have something you just can’t wait to tell the world about? Then why aren’t you blogging?
