I talk about having a sale ready business all of the time. Too often I have people tell me it’s just too hard to get there. When I hear that, I cringe. Not because there isn’t some truth in it, but because the person I’m speaking with thinks doing the work that’s necessary is out of their control.

When you build a sale ready company you have personal and economic freedom. You have the chance to make choices about how you spend your time and what your business does. These are all things that many business owners want but think is out of their control.

In today’s video I want to walk you through 9 repeating activities I want you to use. I want you to remember that we are going for small changes that will take you no more than thirty minutes a day.

I talk about having a sale ready business all the time. Too often I have people tell me it’s just too hard to get there. When I hear that I cringe. Not because there isn’t some truth in it, but because the person that I’m speaking with thinks doing the work that’s necessary is completely out of their control and I know that’s not true.

When you build a sale ready company you have personal and economic freedom. You have the chance to make choices about how you spend your time and what your business does. These are all things that many business owners want but too many think it’s out of their control and not a possibility.

So in today’s video I want you to walk through nine repeating activities I want you to use. I want you to remember that we are going for small changes that will take you no more than thirty minutes a day. I know you don’t have any time to do this stuff, you know you don’t have any time to do this stuff. So what we need to do is just curve off little teeny pieces for you to go forward with this.

So let’s jump in with some things you should know before we get to the time line.

  1. Number one, I want you to think about the changes you make as one percent solutions. This means that we’re only gonna go for small changes at a time. You might think you’ll be going slow with small changes, but I can assure you that won’t happen. What happens is by doing small changes you actually move a lot faster because when something doesn’t work, you get off it quickly and the truth is most of our experiments don’t work.
  2. You’ll often wanna put off the work you need to do to build a sale ready company. Though you’re gonna look at this great big project you do, and because it’s a great big project, you’re gonna wanna put off that work and not do it. So you just put it off to the side and say, “I’ll get to it later.” But later never comes, if you don’t get to it, you’ll never have that sale ready company that I know you really want.
  3. Number three, it’s gonna take some time to see results. Patience is needed in this project. Because we’re going for a small small improvements. You’re not gonna see something that’s magnificent in a week. In a month you’ll start to see some movement, in two months you’ll see a little bit more. Six months say, “Gee things are starting to move.” And a year later if you look back, what you need to do, you’re gonna be astounded by how much you have accomplished.

So here’s a list of things we need to do. Notice, they’re all small steps.

  1. Number one, you need to get a clear understanding of where you are today. If you don’t know where you are today with real clarity, how do you know what you need to improve?
  2. Number two, you need to learn about the concept of big rocks. Now a big rock is a major project, that you wanna accomplish, over a twelve week period. So every week, you’re gonna go through, you’re gonna look at this big rock and say, “What are the small pieces that we need to do “to get this big rock accomplished?” And over that twelve week period, by doing small pieces, it might be every day, it might be once a week, it might be three times a week, you’re gonna get that big concept, that big thing accomplished.
  3. Number three, you need to have a master list of what should be fixed. And what you do, is you start with the thing that will have the biggest effect, for the least amount of effort. I’m basically kind of a lazy guy, I don’t like to work any harder than I have to work. And by working off a master list, where I look and say, “Where is the biggest result I can get, “for the least amount of effort?” Really helps me know what I should be focusing on, right now.
  4. You need to decide, and this is the fourth thing I want you to do. You need to decide what you wanna work on first. Again it’s the thing that’s gonna give that big result, for the least amount of effort. I want you to start off with some really good wins on this program. We don’t wanna start off with something that might bring us things. We wanna start off something that will bring us. Mike Michalowicz has this great book called, “Fix This Next”. You wanna figure out, what is the next thing that needs to be fixed and focus on that.
  5. I’ve already mentioned this which is number five, is break those options down to small steps. Remember that big rock is gonna feel like it’s so hard to do that you’ll never get it done. But if you break it down to small pieces, it becomes a whole lot easier.
  6. Number six, make sure the work that you’re working on, the project you got goes for no more than three weeks. Before you do a full retrospective. The full retrospective if you look back at all the projects you’ve got. What have you been working on, what’s been successful what’s not been successful. How can we fix the things that didn’t work so well? And how can we implement the things that did go well.
  7. Number seven, you’re gonna have your three week review but you’re also gonna have a weekly progress review to see where you’re stuck. And you wanna do this with your team, so where you’re stuck, you can get it unstuck quickly. And not have it sit around, and sit around, and sit around.
  8. At the end of those three weeks again, we wanna look back, see what works, what doesn’t work. We call that the retrospective.
  9. And number nine obviously is wash, rinse and repeat. We’re gonna continue doing this over and over and over. And as we go through the different things in our business you’re gonna find that working out one or two things at a time will move you a lot faster than trying to handle nine or ten things at a time. So I want you to really be narrow on what’s the most important thing, what needs to be next in your business and you work on that.

So when you take these steps you’ll be moving your company to whatever it needs to do to become a sale ready company. Usually it takes at least couple of years for this to happen. Sometimes it’s longer and every once in a while it even happens in less time.

Here’s the secret about building a sale ready company. It is once you get a sale ready company, you’re not gonna wanna sell your business. This has happened to me over and over and over again. I work with somebody to get their company sale ready I go to them and I say, “Gee it’s time to sell your business right now.” And they look at me like I’m absolutely out of my mind. They say to me, they say, “Why would I even wanna sell my company? “I’m having way too much fun, I’m not working very hard “and I’m making more money that I ever thought “I could possibly make.” Now if you build a sale ready company, I’m gonna bet that you’re gonna go from wanting to leave your business to never wanting to leave your business, which causes a whole bunch of other problems, and we’ll talk about that in future videos.
