I know for a fact you want to be effective at what you do. There’s a problem and I bet you know what it is. I bet that you too often get frustrated that you can only do so much.

One of the biggest problems I see is that business owners like you get sucked into activities that other people should be doing instead. You probably even have delegated some of those tasks to your team and they always seem to boomerang right back to you.

This leads to a huge problem and frustration you have. You end up having no time working on what you want to do because you’re always picking up after others. If you continue doing this, there will be a very small chance you’ll ever be able to create an economically sustainable business for yourself.

I know for a fact you wanna be effective at what you do. There’s a problem but you know what it is. I bet you too often get frustrated that you can only do so much and there never seems to be enough time.

One of the biggest problems I see is business owners like you get sucked into activities that other people should be doing instead. You probably have even delegated some of those tasks to your team. And for some reason they always seem to boomerang right back to you.

This leads to a huge problem and frustration that you might have. You ended up having no time to work on your projects and priorities because you’re always picking up after others. Now if you continue doing this, there will be a very small chance you’ll ever be able to create an economically sustainable business for yourself.

I know how hard it is for you to not take back tasks that need to be done is something that I did for years and it was the main mistake I made that held back the success in our business.

Now there’re two issues you’re likely facing.

  1. One is you delegate and things come back to you and you decide to do them, instead of having the person you delegated the job to do.
  2. And number two, you don’t delegate things because you’re afraid to give up control and you’re afraid that the work will be done will be substandard by your staff.

So here are a few things that I want you to consider.

  1. If you’re doing work that you can hire others to do for $25 per hour or less, your business is going to get stuck. You’re going to continue doing things that are just not high value for your business when you could easily hire somebody else to do it. So here’s what I want you to do.
  2. I want you to think about what I call the concept of the $5,000 per hour job. Now there are things that we do in our business are worth five, 10, 15 maybe $25,000 or a million dollars per hour. But we don’t have time to do that because we spend all our time doing these tactical things that somebody we could pay 15, 20, 25 maybe even $30 an hour to do for us instead of us doing it ourself.
  3. There’re a number, you gotta understand that most of the activities you do, someone else could do and do a better job than you. I know that’s true for me and it’s likely true for you.
  4. The thing is you have to learn how to delegate effectively and you must realize you’ll never do it right the first time or for that matter the 10th timeout delegation is process learning how to be good at delegating is gonna take your time and too often I see people like you who just give up and stop trying to do it.

I know these things because I’ve been working with people like you and one of the first activities we always help business owners think about is the value of their time and whether they’re spending time on the right things in their business.

So to get past the dilemma of spending your time the wrong place, here are three three things I want you to do.

  1. Number one and this is really something you’re gonna hate. I’ve never seen anybody like it it’s an incredibly valuable thing nonetheless. I want you to write down in 15 minute increments how you spend your time for two weeks. Now for two weeks you’re gonna hate doing this and they’re gonna be days you’ll miss because you just hate it, but do the best you can with it.
  2. Next I want you to take all those activities you did over the next… That you did over those past two weeks and put an hourly rate next to each of the actives you’ve done and see how much you have had to pay for somebody else to do it besides you.
  3. Now some of those activity you’re gonna write infinity because nobody besides you could do it but it’s not gonna be very many most of the activities you’re going to find is that there are things you could hire somebody for to do for somewhere between 15 and $25 per hour.

Now after you do this, I want you to wash, rinse and repeat except this time, move the hourly rate to $50 then a hundred dollars and then you get the idea the of how the rest of this activity goes. So you keep moving it up till you get yourself to a point where you’re only working on things that are worth 250, 500 a thousand, $5,000 per hour. And you delegate everything else that you could possibly do.

Now you might be saying to yourself, this is gonna be really expensive for me to go out and hire people. I don’t want you to do it all at once, I want you to do it a little bit at a time, take one or two things that are in your calendar for the last two weeks and find a way to delegate it. And then the next week take another one or two things away and find a way to delegate it. Now when you delegate it it’s really, really important that you don’t abdicate which means that when you delegate, you have to inspect to make sure you get the work you want.

So here’s what I’d like to do. I would love to have a conversation with you about this. So feel free contacting me at jpatrick@stage2planning.com to set up a time for us to talk. In the meantime, if you’re not ready to talk, DOWNLOAD our Free Infographic on the Stages Of Transition that you go through as you learn a new skill or as you’re going through a financial transition there are four stages. It’s really important for you to understand what they are.

And here’s something else I’d like you to do, why don’t you scroll down and let me know what you think about getting rid of activities that you shouldn’t be doing in the first place.
