And you might be wondering why would I be doing a video about the Year of Yes, when I often preach that NO is the most important word in the language you can use. We’ll we be getting around to that question in this video, we also be answering four other questions where yes can be confusing.

I recently read one of the more important books I’ve read in many years. It was written by Shonda Rhimes, the television creator of Grey’s Academy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. The title of the book is Year of Yes. Now, you might be wondering why would I be doing a video about the Year of Yes, when I often preach that no is the most important word in the language you can use. We’ll we be getting around to that question in this video, we also be answering four other questions where yes can be confusing.

I bet if you’re like me, you have a hard time not saying yes. In fact, for some of us that’s because we always want to be helpful. For others, it might be that we’re afraid that no one will ever ask us for anything ever again. This is especially true when it comes to potential customers.

Hi, I’m Josh Patrick founder of Stage Two Planning Partners, the Sustainable Business, the Financial Freedom Project, and most recently Cracking the Cash Flow Code. I’m also the author of Sustainable, a theme about creating a personally and economically sustainable business.

The one thing I want you to walk away with from this video is choosing yes will often push your buttons. You’re going to find that often when you say yes, you’re going to go into, what my friend Steve Farber calls the OSM. And for those who have queasy ears, close them because OSM stands for the, ‘Oh Shit Moment’! And today we’re going to find out how the OSM fits in with saying yes.

So first let’s talk about what the OSM is, in fact it’s something that we have every time we start to go off a cliff. And saying yes, often puts us in an uncomfortable place where before we start, we might be saying, My God, how did I get myself in there? And to move forward we have to take that leap into the unknown of what we are going to do.

So, let’s start with our first yes.

And the first yes is the yes to say no.

You know, saying no is a hard thing to do, it takes lots of bravery to say no, and many people just don’t want to say it. Why? Because we really don’t want to hurt others feelings, or perceive we hurt others feelings. But the truth is we have a very limited amount of time and attention that we can give to things. The word no becomes really important, the first thing I want you to do, is give yourself permission, which is start with yes, but end up with no. And for many, that’s a real OSM because saying no to somebody can be really scary. We don’t want to get angry, we don’t want to have a conflict and that’s why we often say no, but it’s also why we might say yes and never get around to doing it.

Here’s the second thing I want you to be saying yes to.

I want you to be saying yes to spending real money on marketing, not a little money here and a little money there and we’ll see what happens.

And the OSM thing around spending real money on marketing is, it takes time to work. You have to have faith that what you’re doing is the right thing to do. And the thing that will get you to where you want to go. While you’re going through spending real money on marketing, there’s going to be times when you’re wondering, am I getting the results I should? And there’s also a chance, especially this is true with me, Is I get really impatient wanting things to happen a lot faster than they do. So the truth is, you have to find somebody good, that you trust and you have to give them the time to get a result for you, you can’t do it half assed and you can’t go in there and do that. Some place I’ve also been.

Here’s the next thing I want you to say yes to:

I want you to say yes to bringing people in to help you run your business.

You can’t do it by yourself. Now, men have a really hard time with this. And the reason men have a really hard time with this is because they think they should know how to do everything, and they think they should be the best at doing everything. Well the truth is, if you’re going to run a great business you’re going to have to stay in your lane, and you’re going to have to bring people into your business who are great at what they do. We don’t know everything ourselves, we never get anywhere by ourselves, we always need help.

Now here’s another thing I want you to be saying yes to.

I want you to say yes for helping your private life.

Now this is some place that women often have a hard time. And it’s simple is, is that, society has taught us that you’re suppose to be good at everything, you’re suppose to be great at work, you’re suppose to be great at home, and everything is suppose to be perfect. Well the truth is we don’t have enough time. If you’re working full-time and you have a big job, or you’re trying to create a business for yourself, you need to be able to say yes to help at home and not just yes at work. Now I find women are really good at asking for help at work, but not so good at asking help at home. So get some help for you at home, it will make your work a lot easier and the truth is you’ll probably be a little bit happier.

And here’s our final yes I want you to be thinking about,

I want you to be saying yes in charging what you’re worth.

I know you never want to hear the words, that you’re too expensive. But the truth is, you’re probably too cheap. And the reason you’re too cheap is because you just can’t get over that OSM moment, where you open you’re mouth and you say I want X dollars per hour, X dollars per month, you need to be able to do this. If you’re not going to be able to charge what you’re worth, you’re never going to be able to crack the cash flow code. That’s the key! One of the keys is cracking the cash flow code, is charging what you’re worth. And realizing you have a much smaller amount of time to sell, than you think you do.
